Sanitext

Sanitext vs Microsoft Presidio

Sanitext is the better Microsoft Presidio alternative when you want a hosted PII API instead of a framework you self-host and tune. Sanitext gives you /detect and /redact endpoints, 30+ languages, auth, quotas, and flat pricing in minutes. Presidio is free and on-prem, but you maintain it.

Microsoft Presidio is the open-source default for PII detection. It is free, customizable, and runs on your own machines. The trade-off: you host it, tune the recognizers, and build the auth, billing, and quota layer yourself. Sanitext is a hosted API that does the same core job, detect and redact PII, with strong multilingual coverage and no servers to manage. This page compares them honestly.

What is Microsoft Presidio?

Microsoft Presidio is an open-source framework for PII detection and anonymization. It is written in Python and released under the MIT license. It combines named-entity recognition, regex patterns, checksums, and context words to find entities like names, emails, phone numbers, and credit card numbers.

Presidio ships two main pieces: an analyzer that finds PII and an anonymizer that masks, replaces, or hashes it. It is the tool most teams compare against because it is free, mature, and backed by a large community. You install it as a library or run it as a service inside your own infrastructure.

When is Microsoft Presidio the better choice?

We will be straight with you. Presidio is the right pick in several cases.

Pick Presidio if you need everything on-prem with zero external calls and you have engineers to run it. Pick it if your budget is the deciding factor, since the framework itself is free. Pick it if you want deep control to write custom recognizers, swap the NER model, or tune confidence scores for a niche domain. And pick it if you are mostly working in English, where its coverage is strongest.

Presidio also wins when you want to inspect and modify the source. It is MIT-licensed, so you can fork it, audit it, and bend it to fit unusual requirements.

Where does Sanitext win?

Sanitext removes the operational work. You do not host a service, patch dependencies, or scale a model. You sign up, get an API key, and call /detect or /redact. A working integration takes about 60 seconds.

Multilingual coverage is the bigger gap. Sanitext detects PII in 30+ languages out of the box, where Presidio is English-first and needs extra models and tuning for strong non-English results. If your data is in Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Portuguese, or a mix, this matters.

Sanitext also ships the product layer Presidio leaves to you: API keys, usage quotas, billing, and support. Pricing is flat and transparent because we own the open-weights model and run it on our own infrastructure, so there is zero per-token AI cost and no metered surprise bill. Your text never goes to a third-party LLM, and we do not retain raw text, we log only counts and timings.

  • —30+ languages with named-entity detection, not English-first
  • —Two endpoints: /detect for spans, /redact for masked text
  • —Flat pricing, no per-token AI cost, overage 2x cheaper than metered hyperscalers
  • —Built-in auth, quotas, billing, and support
  • —No raw-text retention, EU residency and DPA on Enterprise

How do you switch from Presidio to Sanitext?

Migration is mostly a swap of one function call for one HTTP request. If your code calls Presidio's analyzer and anonymizer locally, you replace that with a POST to Sanitext.

Map your labels. Sanitext returns FIRSTNAME, LASTNAME, EMAIL, PHONE, ADDRESS, DATE, URL, ACCOUNT, SECRET, and PREFIX (like Dr.). If you depend on Presidio entity names like PERSON or PHONE_NUMBER, add a small mapping table so downstream code keeps working.

Use /detect when you need entity spans (label, byte offsets, score, and the matched text) and /redact when you just want text with each span masked as [LABEL]. Start by running both tools on the same sample set, compare outputs, then cut over once you trust the results. Sign up gives you a free 300K characters to test, no card required.

An honest note on what this is

Both tools are redaction and data-minimization aids, not anonymization or compliance guarantees. No automated PII detector catches 100% of every edge case, and removing direct identifiers does not by itself make data anonymous under GDPR or de-identified under HIPAA.

Treat Sanitext or Presidio as a strong first pass that reduces exposure. For regulated workflows, keep human review and your own controls in the loop.

bash

curl -X POST https://api.sanitext.app/v1/redact \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SANITEXT_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text": "Email Dr. Jane Doe at jane@acme.com or call +34 600 123 456."}'

# Response:

# "text": "Email [PREFIX] [FIRSTNAME] [LASTNAME] at [EMAIL] or call [PHONE]."

FAQ

Is Sanitext a drop-in replacement for Microsoft Presidio?+

Not a literal drop-in, but close. You swap local Presidio analyzer and anonymizer calls for a POST to Sanitext's /detect or /redact endpoint. You map Presidio entity names like PERSON to Sanitext labels like FIRSTNAME and LASTNAME, then cut over.

Is Microsoft Presidio free and is Sanitext too?+

Presidio is free and MIT-licensed, but you pay to host and maintain it. Sanitext has a free one-time tier of 300K characters with no card, then flat plans from $29/mo. Overage runs $0.35-0.60 per 1M characters, up to 2x cheaper than metered hyperscalers.

Does Sanitext support more languages than Presidio?+

Yes for most non-English cases. Sanitext detects PII in 30+ languages out of the box. Presidio is English-first and needs extra models and recognizer tuning for strong results in other languages, which adds setup work and maintenance.

Where does my text go with Sanitext versus Presidio?+

Presidio runs on your own machines, so data stays on-prem. Sanitext runs on our own infrastructure using an open-weights model, so your text never goes to a third-party LLM. We do not retain raw text and log only counts and timings. EU residency and a DPA are available on Enterprise.

Can Sanitext or Presidio guarantee GDPR or HIPAA compliance?+

No. Both are redaction and data-minimization aids, not anonymization or compliance guarantees. Automated detection does not catch every edge case, and masking direct identifiers alone does not make data anonymous or de-identified. Keep human review and your own controls in place.
